Water Quality Classifications

Download Link:
Abstract: Surface Water Classifications are designations applied to surface water bodies, such as streams, rivers and lakes, which define the best uses to be protected within these waters (for example swimming, fishing, drinking water supply) and carry with them an associated set of water quality standards to protect those uses. Surface water classifications are one tool that state and federal agencies use to manage and protect all streams, rivers, lakes, and other surface waters in North Carolina. Classifications and their associated protection rules may be designed to protect water quality, fish and wildlife, or other special characteristics. Each classification has associated standards that are used to determine if the designated uses are being protected. The data used to be referred to as the 100 k plus data set. This is basically the named streams at the 1:100,000 scale USGS maps. State agencies have added waterbodies as needed for permitting purposes and many of the waterbody names are different from the USGS or Geographic Information Naming System names. Around 2001 the names and breaks were moved over to the 1:24,000 geometry but the unnamed tributaries were not included in the dataset.
Purpose: Dataset to be used in conjunction with waters supply watersheds polygons, HQW ORW polygons, SA waters polygons and others to determine what rules, management strategies, and designated uses apply to a particular waterbody. Refer to for more information on the rules for each classification.
