Jones County, NC 2008 Digital Orthos

Abstract: This data was developed to provide a spatially accurate, high resolution imagery to be used in the creation of other data layers. This Aerial Photography layer is also a primary base layer.
Purpose: An orthoimage is remotely sensed image data in which displacement of features in the image caused by terrain relief and sensor orientation have been mathematically removed. Orthoimagery combines the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. For this dataset, the orthoimages were produced at a 0.5-foot pixel resolution for Jones County, North Carolina, and was flown on dates of February 2nd, 10th and 11th of 2008.
Supplemental Information: Aerial photography was acquired utilizing a Leica ADS40, digital sensor (digital camera) with a model 52 sensor head (sensor # 52-30102). The photography was acquired at a target altitude of 6300 feet above mean terrain (AMT). AMT of ~140 to 160 feet ASL was used for flight planning. The ADS 40 sensor is a push-broom type 12 bit per pixel color digital sensor with linear contact arrays (linear CCD) to capture a simultaneous continuous digital image of 12,000 pixels width of red, green, blue, NIR and PAN bands. Aerial imagery was captured at a ground resolution pixel of about .656 foot with a cross track flight line image width on the ground of about 7,874 feet. 48 parallel flight lines were accomplished with a north-south orientation using a minimum sidelap of 30% between flight lines. During the time of image acquisition, two dual frequency geodetic grade GPS receivers were utilized. One receiver was operated on board the aircraft with the dual frequency antenna location calibrated to the ADS40 sensor. The second receiver was used as a base station located at the OAJ airport (Oak Grove Airport, NW of Pollocksville, Jones County NC: ~ latitude 35.0333, longitude -77.25 at about elevation 27 feet ASL). These receivers were in constant operation during the photography mission and GPS phase data was collected at an epoch rate of 1 second. All GPS data was post processed as NC State Plane NAD 83(NSRS 2007), US Survey feet. Data from The Airborne GPS and an Applanix Inertial Measurement Unit IMU)were used in combination with pre photo mission paneled NCGS ground monuments to control the photography. A total of 25 existing NC Geodetic Survey monuments were paneled with an excellent distribution around the perimeter and across the County (4 in Craven, 1 in Carteret, 2 in Duplin, 2 in Lenoir, 2 in Onslow and 14 in Jones County). Six of these paneled monuments have published NC State Plane coordinates in NAD 1983(NSRS 2007), and nineteen of the paneled monuments have published NC State Plane coordinates in NAD 1983(HARN 2001). Aerial photography acquisition was accomplished with a minimum sun angle of 33 degrees. 22 flight lines were acquired on 20080202 between 10:42 and 13:49 EST. 15 flight lines were acquired on 20080210 between 10:19 and 2:46 EST. 11 flight lines were acquired on 20080211 between 10:27 and 11:35 EST. A twin engine Cessna 441 Conquest II was used with an average ground speed of 195 knots on 20080202, 172 knots on 20080210, and 176 knots on 20080211. Bounding coordinates in NC State Plane NAD 83(NSRS 2007) US Survey feet (1 meter = 3.2808333 feet) were West 2375000; East 2590000; North 550000; and South 380000. Cloud_Cover less than 5%
