2010 North Carolina Statewide Digital Orthoimagery - Download
The North Carolina 911 Board awarded a grant of $12.3 million to the City of Durham's Emergency Communications Center on September 25, 2009 for acquisition of statewide orthoimagery (aerial photography for base mapping purposes). The City of Durham recognized that the value of up-to-date, consistent orthoimagery would apply equally to its neighboring counties. The situation in North Carolina in 2009 was a patchwork of imagery (years captured and resolutions) and a slow pace of new imagery acquisition in difficult economic times. The Durham PSAP concluded that a statewide project would maximize benefits in a timely way. The products of the statewide project are orthoimagery in true color, 6-inch ground resolution in 5,000 by 5,000-foot tiles, in uncompressed and compressed formats, packaged by county for all 100 counties in North Carolina. The project was managed by the NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (CGIA) in the NC OneMap framework of data access. CGIA collaborated with the Geospatial & Technology Management Office to take advantage of the Qualifications-Based Selection contracts in place for orthoimagery acquisition, the NC Geodetic Survey to assure positional accuracy of the new products, and the Statewide Mapping Advisory Committees Working Group for Orthophotography Planning for technical advice. Images were collected with digital cameras in early 2010, image processing and quality control occurred through 2010, and products became available in early 2011. Data will be downloadable through NC OneMap.
This dataset was generated to provide a consistent reference map for base mapping and display in emergency 911 operations and GIS applications.
This dataset is one of 100 county datasets produced in a statewide project. The bounding coordinates in this metadata file represent the bounding coordinates for all image tiles in project area as a whole, not an individual tile.
