12-digit Hydrologic Units (and derived River Basins): This data set is a complete digital hydrologic unit boundary layer to the Subwatershed (12-digit) 6th level for the State of North Carolina. This data set consists of geo-referenced digital data and associated attributes created in accordance with the "FGDC Proposal, Version 2.0 - Federal Standards For Delineation of Hydrologic Unit Boundaries 8/30/04"(
Delineation of coastal watershed boundaries presented unique issues within North Carolina. Coastal boundary lines were determined using NOAA Nautical charts to supplement the USGS base maps. The paper "Proposal to Change Hydrologic Unit Delineations over the Estaurine Waters of North Carolina", Randolph L. Ferguson, 3/30/2000, presents issues and the delineation process used in the coastal regions of North Carolina. Polygons are attributed with hydrologic unit codes for 4th level sub-basins, 5th level watersheds, 6th level subwatersheds, name, size, downstream hydrologic unit, type of watershed, non-contributing areas and flow modification. Arcs are attributed with the highest hydrologic unit code for each watershed, linesource and a metadata reference file. Water Supply Watersheds: The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Water Quality, in cooperation with the NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, developed the digital Water Supply Watersheds data to enhance planning, siting and impact analysis in areas directly affecting water supply intakes. This file outlines the extent of protected and critical areas and stream classifications for areas around water supply watersheds in which development directly affects a water supply intake. This file enables users to identify the areas which have special restrictions for building and development based on water supply intakes. This file is updated as changes occur.
